Axe with Crescent-Shaped Blade
Makonde, Tanzania
Iron, wood
Late 19th century / early 20th century
Makonde axes and scepters are generally quite obscure, and their designs can vary quite a bit. However, the shape of the blade and axe head seen here are classic Makonde designs. Other examples have varying degrees of geometric designs added to the iron and wood, and some even have heads carved into the wood. This example is more abstract than most, and also more petite. Despite the axe blade being much larger than the axe head, the piece exhibits great balance. Distinctive of this specific type, the tang of the blade is split and goes in two different directions (typically up and down, but sometimes left and right).
