Sickle Knife
Makere / Medje / Popoï, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood
Late 19th / early 20th century
This blade was made by a Mangbetu-related culture such as the Makere or Popoï or perhaps the Meje (Medje). Elsen states the iron forging is recognizably Mangbetu. The work on both sides of the blade is mostly the same, but one side is incised. Most examples of this type have an ivory handle; the wood handle seen here is uncommon (Elsen, Tribal Arms Monographs, Vol. 1 No. 1, 1996).
