Elaborate Equestrian Atlantid Figure
Tiv, Nigeria
Bronze
Early 20th century
This piece was auctioned by Mid-Hudson Auction Galleries (New Windsor, New York) in 2006. That auctionhouse stated "originally acquired with a certificate of authenticity from Sir William Fagg dated March 26, 1966." Unfortunately, that document was not photographed by the auctionhouse and is currently unaccounted for.
A closely-related Tiv Bronze figure was auctioned by Giquello & Associés (Paris) in 2024 for €4,160. That figure shares many aesthetic similarities with this piece. Importantly, it displays the same rectangular panels adorning the figure. These could represent ceremonial dressings or possibly even armor, but the commonality between the two pieces is undenaible. Both pieces also have very long appendages protruding far from the core of the casting - on this piece it's the braids of the coiffure; on the Giguello piece, it's the left arm of the figure.
This is an extremely complex and sophisticated casting.
